A page is turning for David Goffin, who played his final match at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters this Sunday. At 35, the former World No. 7 and semi-finalist in the Principality had indeed announced a few weeks ago that he would end his career this season.
A decision he reflected on with a smile and great clarity, just after receiving a tribute on Court des Princes in the presence of Ms. Mélanie-Antoinette de Massy, President of the Monegasque Tennis Federation and the Monte-Carlo Country Club, and David Massey, Tournament Director of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
Interview

David, for your final match, a three-set loss (6-3, 6-7, 7-6 to Emilio Nava), you couldn’t have experienced a more dramatic scenario…
That’s true, but I wanted to give everything in this match. It was the last time I was playing the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, a tournament I love, so I had to give it my all, even if it was difficult at the start. I had to fight, try to find solutions, try to give myself a chance to play more matches. So yes, it was a match full of twists and turns, difficult, but I enjoyed it. I really liked this match.

Was the decision to end your career difficult to make?
It was difficult to make, and at the same time… the hardest part is admitting it to yourself, actually. Realizing all the “little things,” like being a bit tired on some days, having less motivation, things like that, and asking yourself: do I still really want this? Once you realize that the decision inside is made and you’re no longer lying to yourself, the decision becomes easy to make.

Goffin vs Nava – Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters 2026
What are your best memories from the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters?
My semi-final against Rafa! (in 2017, ed.) That’s my best result here. But I’ll remember many matches, like my wins over Novak Djokovic or Dominic Thiem (also in 2017). Every match on this centre court is unforgettable, actually—it’s one of the most beautiful centre courts in the world. I really wanted to play here one last time. Because I’ve always loved the clay season and this is where it begins. And since 2014, I’ve lived here, and during the tournament, being able to sleep in your own bed is a luxury! My family is usually here, and all of that means I’ve always felt good here.
