Carlos Alcaraz weathered an early shotmaking barrage from Alexander Bublik before claiming a comprehensive 6-3, 6-0 win to reach the semi-finals of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters Friday, claiming his 300th match win in the process.
The defending champion will next face the winner of World No. 6 Alex de Minaur and hometown hero Valentin Vacherot, with a possible No. 1 vs. No. 2 final showdown with Jannik Sinner still a possibility. Should the rivals meet in the championship match, the winner will be No. 1 on Monday.
“I played a great match against an unpredictable player, where you don’t know what’s coming next,” Alcaraz said. “I’m very happy for my 300th win and hopefully there will be many more to come.”
From 0-2 in the first set, Bublik won three consecutive games with bold ball striking to throw down a challenge to the Spaniard. But it was fleeting resistance as Alcaraz won the next 10 games to race to victory in just 63 minutes.
Alcaraz, who went 22-1 on the clay season last year, clubbed 11 forehand winners and took advantage of 28 unforced errors from the Kazakh.
