Berrettini Routs Medvedev To Reach R3

08.04.2026

Matteo Berrettini produced a stunning result to begin Wednesday’s play at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, serving up a double bagel in 49 minutes to dismiss World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev, who had 19 wins on the season coming into the match, did not earn a game point on his own serve in a perplexing opener to his clay-court campaign. It is the first time that Berrettini has won a tour-level match 6-0, 6-0 and the first time that Medvedev has lost by that scoreline.

Remarkably, the Italian is through to the third round without dropping a game. In the first round he led Roberto Bautista Agut 4-0 when the Spaniard retired through injury.

Medvedev’s unforced error count of 23 exceeded the total number of points he won (17). But take nothing away from Berrettini, who hit cleanly and deeply from the baseline to capture what he described as “most definitely one of the best performances of my life”.

“I think I missed three shots for the match, and it’s not easy, especially with a tricky player,” Berrettini said. “The game plan was perfect, and my weapons were working.”

The former World No. 6, who came into the match at No. 106 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, earned his first Top 10 win since beating second seed Alexander Zverev here in the same round last year.

After claiming his first win in four career meetings with Medvedev, Berrettini will next meet the winner of Brazilian teen Joao Fonseca and Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, who last year reached the final of the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
