Press conference – Milan
Milan, 23 October 2019. It was during a press conference organised in Milan, in the Palazzo Guireconsulti, near the famous Duomo, that Zeljko Franulovic, the Tournament Director, presented the next Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
Organised by the SMETT (Société Monégasque pour l’Exploitation du Tournoi de Tennis), from 11th to 19th April 2020, on the famous clay courts of the Monte-Carlo Country Club, the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is the first European tournament of the prestigious ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category. Along with the Formula 1 Grand Prix, this tournament is one of most emblematic sports events of the Principality, and for over a century has marked the start of the Spring season of sports and cultural events on the Riviera.
We remind you that this year’s Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters saw the Italian Fabio Fognini winning his first ATP Masters 1000 Tournament beating the Serb Dusan Lajovic, 6-3, 6-4, in the finals. Fabio raised the “Prince’s Trophy” 58 years after the victory of Nicola Pietrangeli.
“The 2019 edition was also notable in sporting terms, with the new generation of players affirming itself by seriously unsettling the best world players. In particular, I’m thinking of three young Monaco residents: the 18 year-old Canadian Felix Augier-Aliassime, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and the semi-finalist, the Russian Daniil Medvedev who eliminated the world number one player Novak Djokovic.
I have also observed with great interest the excellent results of Italian tennis, with at the top Fabio Fognini and Matteo Berrettini. Since our tournament, Matteo has had an excellent season, reaching the semi-finals of the US Open. Without forgetting of course, the upcoming young Italian player Jannik Sinner”, stated Zeljko Franulovic.
The Tournament Director also mentioned that the ticket sales for the 2020 edition are open and that the public is already showing keen interest, including many Italian tennis clubs. His advice was to reserve seats on the official website (www.rolexmontecarlomasters.mc) as quickly as possible to take advantage of the best seats still available and pointed out that the first weekend of the Tournament will be during the Easter weekend.
The 114th edition, will be launched with the official draw ceremony, in the presence of Fabio Fognini, defending champion, on Friday 10th April. Several events are on the programme, such as the Kids’ Day on Sunday 12th April 2020, which attracted over 1,700 children in 2019, and the traditional Grande Nuit du Tennis on Friday 17th April.
Don’t miss next year’s event from 11th to 19th April 2020.
